Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning

The
Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning
Commission (M-NCPPC) acquired the South
Germantown Recreational Park in the 1960s to
serve as a recreational park for the upper
Montgomery County area. South Germantown
Recreational Park (SGRP) is a special place to
spend the day away from the hustle and bustle of
daily life. Its 690-acres of rolling landscape
is the ideal setting for the multi-use
recreational park designed to meets the needs of
a
growing community.
Maryland
Soccerplex
In October, 2000, M-NCPPC
and the Maryland
Soccer Foundation opened the Maryland
SoccerPlex which includes 19 regulation
sized, irrigated soccer fields, and a 3200 seat
championship field. The public-private
partnership has resulted in playing fields that
are being recognized as some of the best in the
country.
In
order to make room to construct the SoccerPlex,
an expanded model airport was relocated to a 40
acre tract in a nearby stream valley park. The
model airpark is operated by DC/RC, one of the
largest model airplane clubs in the nation. It
includes a 600 ft. paved runway.
Discovery
Sports Center
In
December, 2000 the Discovery Sports Center, a
65,000 square foot indoor multi-sport recreation
facility, featuring the area's two largest
indoor soccer fields, was opened. The
Discovery Sports Center is also used for other
indoor sports---basketball, volleyball,
roller/field hockey, baseball, rugby and
lacrosse---during the off-season. More
outdoor soccer fields are planned, bringing
the
total to 24.
A golf driving range, which offers synthetic and
natural turf tees, opened near the rear of the
complex.

include an 8 lane, 25 meter lap pool with two
diving boards, a freeform shallow water leisure
pool and two large water flumes with kiddy
slide, tot pool, snack bar, bath house and lawn
